A problem that appeared in motion
A uniform that looked clean at rest could look quite different when an arm lifted or a torso turned. Dark triangles on Dana’s back and Nerd’s chest were the clearest examples. Appearing halfway through a movement, they could make the fabric seem torn and draw attention away from the worker’s expression and pose.
The investigation went beyond shadows and textures. The back sides of some inward-facing surfaces were also being drawn, producing dark patches during animation. Those back faces are now hidden by the materials used across all five workers. The same setting is preserved when the characters are rebuilt.
The same pose, the same light
The change was compared across Dana, Nerd, Bruno, Lex and Joe using six poses and four viewing directions: 120 before-and-after pairs in total. Camera, lighting, texture and pose stayed the same, making it possible to see the difference without a more flattering angle or brighter lighting. The 23 related character-motion checks also passed.
These are controlled comparisons in the development environment. They do not represent a new online playtest or a claim that every animation is now flawless. Extreme joint bends, clothing intersections and small seam issues remain separate areas for review.
A more consistent look for the familiar crew
This work did not replace textures, remodel the workers or change their animations. It was limited to how their surfaces are displayed, keeping all five familiar appearances intact. The aim is for a wave or a turn in the middle of a shift to read as a movement, without distracting breaks across a uniform.
The different personalities in the personnel files still belong to that same crew. Character selection changes appearance; this visual fix adds no new abilities, speed or strength advantages. There is already enough disorder in the mall without the uniforms joining in.
